Interview with Riccardo Frizza: The great expert on Verdi


During rehearsals for Otello at Ópera de Bilbao, Riccardo Frizza sat down with Felix Ardanaz of Opera World to discuss the upcoming run of  La traviata at Teatro La Fenice, which marks his first time leading Verdi’s beloved work.

“Riccardo Frizza, a real expert on the Italian lyric repertoire and particularly on Verdi’s output, possesses the qualities of the greatest conducting masters: impeccable gesture, an analytical vision that guarantees total fidelity to the original text, and a moving expression that floods all his performances with an overwhelming intensity,” wrote Felix Ardanaz of Opera World.

Buongiorno San Marco! La traviata and Tosca at Teatro La Fenice, opening August 25


This August through October, Riccardo Frizza conducts back-to-back performances of Verdi’s La traviata and Puccini’s Tosca at Teatro la Fenice in Venice.

This season’s opening of La traviata marks the Italian maestro’s first time leading Verdi’s 1853 work. The production, starring Francesca Dotto and Elena Monti alternating in the role of Violetta Valéry, Francesco Demuro and Shalva Mukeria performing the role of Alfredo Germont, and Dmitri Platanias and Giuseppe Altomare sharing the role of Giorgio Germont, runs from August 25 to October 4, 2015.

Performances of Puccini’s Tosca begin August 28 and end on October 2, and features Fiorenza Cedolins, Svetlana Kasyan, Stefano Secco, Mario Malagnini, Marco Vratogna, and Angelo Veccia. Discover the full cast here.
