On 4th January, I will conduct the first New Year Concert at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, an extraordinary event that will not only feature the Liceu orchestra but also that of La Fenice on stage. Venice and Barcelona: an artistic twinning rooted in a shared history of tragedy and rebirth. Both theatres, devastated by fires in the 1990s (the Liceu on 31st January 1994 and La Fenice on 29th January 1996), now stand as symbols of reconstruction, resilience and renewed artistic life. But for me, the occasion is even more special: I will be leading the orchestras of the theatres where I’ve conducted the most and with which I’ve created a special relationship over the years. In 2026 I will reach the 25-year milestone in my career and am struck by this further coincidence.
